Viasna Belarus

<h2><span class="ql-size-small">Human Rights Center </span><em class="ql-size-small">Viasna</em><span class="ql-size-small">, a major human rights network founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, has been protecting human rights in Belarus since 1996.</span></h2><h2><span class="ql-size-small">After the historic protests of 2020, most of Viasna team has been forced into exile, while the organization's leader, Ales Bialiatski, was imprisoned together with several other activists.</span></h2><h2><span class="ql-size-small">Repression in Belarus is systemic and nation-wide. Since 2020, over 7,500 politically motivated convictions have been recorded, and more than 1,200 people remain imprisoned for political reasons.</span></h2><h2><span class="ql-size-small">Viasna’s priorities are: legal and humanitarian assistance to victims of political repression and their families (since 2020, Viasna has provided assistance to more than 1,600 victims in criminal cases alone), exposing human rights violations (spring96.org and accounts on social media are the main sources of data for various audiences), documentation of torture and ill-treatment (since 2020, Viasna, within the framework of the IAPB coalition, has documented about 3,200 cases, which can be used to prosecute those responsible for the large-scale repression). Since 2020, over 16,000 updates have been published on spring96.org. The website has been visited by over 3.5 mil unique users, and viewed over 12 mil times. The monthly coverage of Viasna’s key social media accounts is over 2.5 mil.</span></h2><h2><span class="ql-size-small">The project aims to support Viasna's two pillars (assistance to victims and dissemination of information), together with sustaining the operations of human rights defenders in exile.</span></h2><h2><span class="ql-size-small">The support is critical amid waning funding, especially after the U.S. government terminated thousands of foreign aid and domestic grant programs.</span></h2>
