In the Palenque de San Basilio, some traditions such as language, food, dance, and culture typical of Africans are still preserved. It is located very close to the Canal del Dique , 50 km from the city of Cartagena de Indias . It has a population of approximately 4,200 people and borders the districts of Malagana , San Pablo and Palenquito. Because it is a corregimiento, it does not have economic or administrative autonomy. In Colombia , the word corregimiento is applied to populations that do not reach the status of municipality , its jurisdiction being subordinated to a municipality or, in the case of non-municipalized areas (whose head is a corregimiento), directly administered by the departments . The population centers are called veredas .&nbsp; Isolation has allowed them to maintain most of the African cultural traditions in Colombia (music, medical practices, social organization and cultural rites) and even more, they have developed a Creole language, a mixture of Spanish with the original African languages ​​(the palenquero ). The music that accompanies most of their activities is an important part of the cultural development of this town, giving shape to their social practices. Traditions such as the "lumbalú", a funeral ceremony in which the community is summoned by means of the drums, and a nine-day ritual begins in commemoration of the deceased. <h2>Music:</h2>According to their traditions, music plays a very important role in culture, which accompanies most rites and celebrations, especially lumbalú . Palenquera music is happy and is expressed in dances such as: the entrompao, paraíto or the walk, danced in pairs or the mapalé (dance that celebrates freedom), the púyala, the palenquero son, the chalusonga, the champeta. But in many rites, music also accompanies pain rites, such as those mentioned in the "lumbalu". These are based on the palenquera religiosity and its social organization. The musical tradition goes from generation to generation, because in almost every moment of daily life, music is an important and traditional part. Sexteto Tabalá, Son Palenque and Radio Matuna are examples of the music and tradition that is maintained in palenque. The `Bullerengue seated", the "Son del Negro" and the "Son palenquero de Sexteto" are musical expressions in which African roots are reflected along with the appropriation of foreign elements that have been inserted into the rhythms over time The Son palenquero of Sexteto, for example, in its current form is the result of the mixture of its own elements with rhythms brought by Cubans who arrived at the beginning of the 20th century to work on the sugar plantations near Palenque . <h4>Economics:</h4>The economic activities of San Basilio lack any industrial structure, therefore the activities of its inhabitants are the ones that supply and fulfill the function of economically sustaining the population. Among these activities are the raising of pigs and poultry, small crops in the patios of the houses. There is a pharmacy, a restaurant, a warehouse, a carpenter and an electrician-builder. <h5>Education:</h5>The educational programs, together with the schools in San Basilio de Palenque have created processes to teach all its inhabitants cultural and oral traditions. The Palenque Ethno-education Program emerged in the 1980s as a community initiative that sought to prevent the fundamental elements of Palenquera culture from being lost, and also as an attempt to reread the history of Palenque from an autochthonous point of view. In this sense, it was important to direct the content of education towards a goal of its own: the recovery and strengthening of the sense of belonging through language, history and the memory of San Basilio de Palenque. This educational model is an interesting pedagogical proposal based on an ideal of social and cultural relevance.
