VR Headsets for Criminology Students
The metaverse offers new opportunities for crime, control, and the study of them. Criminologists are barely thinking about it. Our students are getting zero exposure. The mission of the Metaverse Society of Criminology ("MSC") is to increase the quantity and quality of metaverse criminology ("metacrim"). We are the field's first society without physical borders. A massive barrier to metacrim is the cost of virtual reality (VR) headsets. The MSC challenged itself to provide 100 students with Meta Quest 2 VR headsets. Your donation will pay for this equipment and other expenses (e.g., shipping, fees, taxes). The VR headsets will be distributed to criminology students in every corner of the world, via local institutions (e.g., universities, foundations, charities, embassies). A utilitarian society, our distribution process will pursue the greatest good. The result will be an inclusive program with a diverse cohort of "junior meta-criminologists." The MSC's director, Scott Jacques (me), will randomly mix the students into groups of 10. Together in the metaverse (probably on Meta Workrooms), they will move through a series of educational, research, and service challenges. They will identify problems, solutions, and opportunities to metacrim, both as a place to do criminology and as a subfield devoted to metaverse-related crime and control. In a mixed-media edited volume, we will share our experiences and findings, with suggestions for growing and improving metacrim. Authorship will be determined with the CRediT model. This edited volume will be published open access (free) on CrimRxiv, criminology's repository. We will acknowledge your donation in the book, to the extent your information is identifiable. Thank you for the consideration.
