I live in Chilliwack, BC, Canada. The indigenous Stolo people have lived in this area for 10,000 years. Today Chilliwack has about 100,000 residents and a severe homelessness problem with a disproportionate number of indigenous. There have been times when the nearby city of Vancouver has brought bus-loads of homeless to Chilliwack. A free one-way ticket. NIMBY at a horrid scale or a reasonable solution to overcrowded alleyways at Hastings St. and Main St? I'll leave that up to you but no matter what your personal views on homelessness, the warm climate of Southwestern BC is a haven for homeless. We have an unexpectedly huge homeless problem in South-West British Columbia and they are hungry. I want to feed them. It also happens to be one of the warmest climates in Canada which is a huge draw for people living on park benches.I believe filling a person's belly can make a big difference in the world. People will be kinder and more productive after eating a healthy lunch. Maybe even cut down on property crime and small theft. One of the great things about the climate, is the local produce available. There are all sorts of farms and dairies selling their goods. I will extend the value of my donations by sourcing as much food as possible from local producers. I will buy use $250 of food to make healthy sandwich-based lunches (turkey, ham & peanut butter & jam [vegan option!]). I will buy from local businesses where available. These meals will also include a small bottle of milk, some vegetables, a piece of fruit and a cookie. The next day we will distribute these to the local homeless populations. We will direct one hundred towards gas and vehicle maintenance and one hundred fifty towards room & board expenses.I will create a new Facebook Page called Feed Chilliwack and post pictures of the gritty smiling faces of our lunch recipients and the food & gas receipts. This will allow donors and the public to see and get inspired by our efforts. If it goes well it will be repeated. My team is made of myself, a 44 year old man, and my 16 year old daughter..
