Since October 2022, we gather every Thursday to deliver educational talks about technology, inviting enthusiasts who want to learn about Web3. The purpose of this experiment is to document the application of current web3 technologies within traditional real-life communities. The goal is to ease the adoption of self-sovereign, decentralized, and transparent solutions to one of the most wide real-life use cases in LatAm: local community governance. In Mexico, there are 14 million condominiums. With an average of 3.9 inhabitants per household, this means approximately 54.6 million people live in shared properties. These residents pay a monthly maintenance fee, participate in semiannual assemblies to decide on budget expenditures and rely on a board to plan and execute related activities. Condominiums are a perfect fit to experiment DAO and web3 governance tooling IRL. <a href="https://giveth.io/project/urbanika" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Urbánika</a> is already working on making local governance a convivial thing where direct and liquid democracy substitutes the current inefficient representative way. <h2>Hello World! 🌊🐠✨</h2> <a href="https://linktr.ee/mesoreefdao" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MesoReefDAO</a> (Mesoamerican Reef DAO) is a Regenerative Coral Reef Science project that focuses on the creation of a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) of DeSci (Decentralized Science) that seeks to scale coral reef conservation efforts in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. <img src="https://giveth.mypinata.cloud/ipfs/QmcpiDp3sBiJESWxLDWmXtfq8Wpht4xbqWHWo3zVosWKL4"> The Mesoamerican Reef is one of the most biodiverse and productive marine ecosystems in the world, providing crucial ecosystem services, such as coastal protection, fisheries, and tourism, to millions of people in the region. It stretches over 1,000 kilometers from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to the Bay Islands in Honduras (Fig 1). <img src="https://giveth.mypinata.cloud/ipfs/QmY51bBh2CakufUVZzY2g93ak8Qh69afUzcNM1tjCdDHwi"><a href="https://www.wwfca.org/en/landscapes/mesoamerican_reef/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" class="ql-size-small">Fig 1. MesoReefDAO General Framework.</a> MesoReefDAO is built on the Ethereum blockchain and is governed by a community of stakeholders who share a common interest in conserving and restoring the MAR. The DAO's governance structure is designed to be transparent, inclusive, and democratic, allowing anyone to participate and contribute to decision-making processes. The DAO's mission is to leverage the power of decentralized technologies to enable innovative solutions to the challenges facing the MAR. One of the key initiatives of MesoReefDAO is to develop a regenerative decentralized science (DeSci) offset program. The program will incentivize individuals and organizations to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to MAR conservation efforts. The fund will support the development and implementation of coral reef restoration projects in the MAR region. The fund will be managed by the DAO's community and will be open to contributions from anyone who wants to support the conservation and restoration of the MAR. Overall, MesoReefDAO is a cutting-edge initiative that seeks to harness the power of decentralized technologies to address the urgent challenges facing the Mesoamerican Reef. From the buzzing streets of Mexico City to rural pockets of creative resistance across the country, communities in Mexico are crafting new futures rooted in culture, care, and collective power. Mexico is also a hub for web3 innovation with many talented and inspiring individuals crafting the future of financial freedom. This Cause's goals are to empower initiatives across Mexico that are embracing web3 technology and using it as a means to tackle tough challenges across the Republic. Through this Cause we hope to fund projects within this scope: <ul><li>Unique spaces, conferences &amp; events for cultivating Mexican community and culture</li><li>Conservation, biodiversity and ecological restoration of Mexico's amazing nature</li><li>Tools for Mexicans to embrace financial sovereignty</li><li>Mexico based communities propogating web3 technology</li><li>Advocacy &amp; support groups for marginalized communities and societal issues</li><li>Security and empowerment of Mexican women</li></ul> What unites these initiatives is a deep belief in the power of grassroots action. They don’t just respond to the needs of the day, they imagine and enact alternatives. They’re building safer, more creative, and more just systems—sometimes block by block, sometimes hectare by hectare. Supporting these projects is a commitment to Mexico’s cultural soul, ecological preservation and social transformation. From the heart of the city to the edges of the map, these are the people who refuse to give up on each other—or on the future.
