Helpers Social Development Foundation: Providing Climate Change Education + Action, and Increasing Climate Resilience for Underserved Communities in Nigeria. Education and action are needed to create sustained change in local communities. Everyone at&nbsp;Helpers Social Development Foundation&nbsp;Learning Centers, workshops, public schools, and listeners to our weekly radio program, receive education and messages about the need to protect our environment. Our community-led foundation works with rural, low-income communities in Nigeria. We run projects that directly address climate change such as solar system-powered electricity, solar-powered water, tree, and shrub planting, clean-up campaigns, and digital skill centers to increase climate resilience, especially for young people, women and youth. Individual action is encouraged e.g. buying and planting trees to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mindsets need to change and everyone needs to take action to address climate change that is increasingly impacting lives in Nigeria through drought, decreased agricultural production and reduced food security, health and nutrition. <h2>Challenge</h2>Millions of Nigerians lack knowledge of what they can do to help with climate change and that what they do will make a difference. People need education as well as projects that they can be involved in. Our projects are locally led and include greening Nigeria and cleaning up/preventing pollution. People also need role models of environmental activism, both individuals and organizations. The Helpers Social Development Foundation learning models environmental awareness and action for all people. <h2>Solution</h2>This project will educate Nigerians on environmental issues and provide grassroots-level action. It will give funding to community-led tagriculture farming, ree/shrub planting programs that reach 8 provinces where AIL works, through Learning Centers, workshops, and events. Other projects are environmental clean-up and pollution reduction education. For example, people will learn not to litter, burn tires, or other high-polluting items.In addition, our skills training courses focus on empowering young people, women, and youth to increase their economic opportunities and build climate resilience among those most vulnerable to climate impacts. <h2>Road Map and Metrics</h2>• Provide climate education to 500 students every year in our primary school, community center,, and workshops• Utilize our solar water pump and well to provide water for 400 members of our community.• 80 Empower young people, women, and youth annually through our digital skills training centers so that they can build climate resilience as agricultural production decreases and climate change threatens traditional livelihoods.• Partner with The Solar Foundation to develop a solar-powered Public Charging Station for our community to charge their mobile phones and devices.• Construct water facilities in rural communities without access to water.• Install solar systems in communities without electricity. <h2>About Us</h2>Helpers Social Development Foundation&nbsp;is a duly registered nonprofit and nonpolitical organization in Nigeria that was formed in 2016 and officially registered with the Nigeria Corporate Affairs Commission on 27th June 2019.The executive director, Okeke Chidi Chinwendu and his wife established the NGO with a mission to reach millions of less privileged Africans who are facing the same problems he faced while growing up in a small village in Nigeria. Chidi and his wife, Okeke Amarachi Sophia, believe there is an urgent need for well-rounded initiatives to empower Nigerian women and youth. <h2>About</h2><h2>Creating Self-Sustaining Ecosystems for Community Resilience and Wellbeing</h2> Our project aims to inspire new perspectives and provide skills to enable people to facilitate resilience and wellbeing for themselves and their communities. We collaborate with various experts and local communities to attract the attention of eco-conscious communities to our developments and achievements in regenerating degraded lands into self-sustaining ecosystems. <img src="https://giveth.mypinata.cloud/ipfs/QmfMmRewKvrsdqT5GZ1wivGCCZqHXZZ2wn6UdLEGL7BcDG">The Project Environment Located across 50 ecovillages and permaculture centres in Ukraine, our project leverages the expertise of local and international partners to transform degraded farmland into thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems. These settlements serve as living classrooms, featuring edible forest gardens, permaculture food systems, biochar production, and innovative agricultural practices. Key ecovillages include Omelyanivka, Kukhari, Tepla Hora, Tartak, Prostir Lyubovi and Bezvodne. These ecological spaces are supported by off-grid infrastructure, including solar power, water systems, native tree nurseries, tool sheds, greenhouses, and community spaces. <h2>Our Theory of Change</h2><h2> </h2>Our work is deeply connected to the land and the people of each ecovillage. We are guided by the stories, needs, and aspirations of the local communities we serve. By creating a Learning Environment that enhances and enables learning, we foster multidisciplinary educational experiences that empower individuals and communities. The health of our Learning Environment is interdependent with the health of the organization, the land, and the community. We focus on providing opportunities for learning that encompass preventative mental health, collaborative work, bioregional and regenerative land care, and sustainable food production. <h2>Learning Experiences and Impact</h2><h2><img src="https://giveth.mypinata.cloud/ipfs/QmRMta9vmSkQZ6LEc7mPESd9Kx3K82nxqX1v5JHEqRPPbj"></h2>We offer a range of programs designed to engage and empower learners of all ages, enabling them to return to their communities with the skills needed to promote local resilience and wellbeing. RehabilitationCamps: Programs like <a href="https://teplagora.org/en/kolo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kolo</a> provide refuges, veterans and social volunteers refuge and support for people who have had to flee their home because of the war in Ukraine and a deep connection to their cultural roots.2. Community Education: Local <a href="https://genukraine.com.ua/index.php/uk/navchannia" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Community Building Courses </a> and workshops like on regenerative practices, mental health, and collaborative living.3. Global Programs: Internships and educational exchanges with international institutions. Reconnecting to Land and Water The health of our communities is intrinsically linked to the health of our land. This includes a catalog of achievements and low-tech solutions focusing on key aspects of our network's development: water, energy, common spaces, mobility, and youth exchange. We aim to present our materials and achievements at the following gatherings:- GEN Gathering in Sweden in August 2024- Regen Tribe Gathering in Portugal in September 2024- Regenerative Agriculture Conference Additionally, we seek to engage volunteer movements in training and volunteering at these offgrid ecovillages, enabling youth to gain skills in self-sustaining technologies. This may have caused soil degradation and droughts in different parts of Uganda. It is important to carry out a quick interventions to restore the lost forests glory; We have therefore arrived at a solution to plant more extra trees and other measures to tackle the climate crisis.<img src="https://giveth.mypinata.cloud/ipfs/QmRXpewQwXdt99cpwdHqp6dvW71WchFQufP93VZpsYAqbR">AYOWECCA UGANDA has launched two million tree planting program to minimize Environment impacts&nbsp;from tree degradation as well as to improve the nutritional status of the community mainly shade and fruit trees are to be planted in both schools and Communities in Uganda. To stimulate domestic increments in forest cover through the establishment of a regional forestry nursery. The target is to raise 50000 plants in the nursery that will be planted in the region. &nbsp;Trees contribute a lot to the Environment over a long periods by providing oxygen, improving air quality, Climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil and supporting wildlife. We have chosen to grow and plant more trees. To grow, distribute seedlings and also participate in tree planting. To plant fruit trees in Schools, health centers and in Communities where we live. To foster every Ugandan to plant 5-10 trees every year. To have a nationalisms alert for the Climate Crisis and actions to be taken. This grassroots organization grows fruit trees and other plants and distributes them to their local community in Tororo, Uganda. We’ve partnered with Ayowecca on multiple solutions including solar-powered security lighting and a fence to protect their nursery, a mobile solar solution to power their office&nbsp;operations and solar lanterns to replace kerosene lamps for over 100 local women. <a href="https://www.helpersfoundation.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Helpers Social Development Foundation</a> - Helpers Foundation’s primary focus is on education for vulnerable children. A secondary focus is on economic empowerment and health awareness programs in Nigeria. We have partnered with Helpers Foundation on multiple projects in Enugu State including solar power and a computer center for their primary school, solar for their community center, a solar-powered well &amp; security lights along with a storage tank to supply water for approximately 400 members of their community and a solar metering project, along with <a href="https://www.whynotswitch.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Switch Electric</a>, to be able to showcase the clean power that is being generated. <a href="https://omawatanzania.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">OMAWA</a> - Okoa Maisha Ya Watoto (OMAWA) supports and advocates for the needs and rights of orphans and vulnerable children in rural communities. We partnered with OMAWA in Tanzania to create a microgrid for their Iring’ong’weni Primary School which faced significant challenges of electricity and no integration of computers and technology in the delivery of their curriculum. This project provides clean energy from the sun to power classrooms used by approximately 800 children, staff houses and offices, security lights and a charging station for the entire community for phone charging and other productive uses.&nbsp; <a href="https://carefortheneedycharity.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Care for the Needy Orphanage</a> - Care for the Needy Charity provides education, love, hope and care for orphaned and abandoned children in Uganda. The Solar Foundation has partnered with this NGO to provide solar-powered lighting for increased safety and security outside of their building so that the children feel safe being outside after dark. This was our co-founder, Jon Ruth’s, first solar project in Africa where he helped fund a solar solution for their school and a solar-powered water pump for clean water. <a href="https://www.curamericas.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Curamericas</a> - This nonprofit partners with underserved communities to make measurable and sustainable improvements in their health and well-being by funding healthcare facilities around the world. We partnered with Curamericas to fund solar for their Iranda Healthcare Clinic in Kisii, Kenya. This 9.9 kW rooftop solar system provides 24 x 7 clean energy for the community clinic, maternity wing and refrigeration for vaccines and other medicines. <a href="https://www.footprintproject.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Footprint Project</a> - A non-profit focused on education and building mobile solar generators for disaster relief. We partnered with Footprint to fund 3 mobile solar generators and a Build Power training workshop for La Escuela Alejandro Tapia y Rivera and community members in La Parguera, Puerto Rico.<h2> </h2><h2>Why Us 🤝🏿</h2>The Solar Foundation team members have the background to execute this vision because of our combined experience in solar, crypto, web3, and research and our determination to have an environmental and social impact with the projects we build. With a lengthy background in solar and sustainability, Jon is perfectly positioned to develop strong partnerships with solar providers around the globe. He has negotiated millions of dollars of construction contracts over his career and developed solar projects valued at millions of dollars. He has also been on the board of a non-profit developing and funding microgrid projects internationally. Coleen has a marketing background at both Microsoft and Apple along with 10 years experience writing and editing healthcare-related articles and books. The Solar Foundation

This cause focuses on community led NGOs and nonprofits that will utilize funding to bring decentralized (distributed) clean, reliable solar energy solutions to underserved populations who are often those most impacted by the climate crisis. Many of the projects are run by trusted, local partners in Africa although people all over the world can benefit from access to affordable, simple-to-install solar solutions that lower energy costs, reduce carbon footprints and provide people with the opportunity to generate their own renewable power from the sun. This cause will include verified projects that adhere to the following four guiding principles:<ol><li>Enable a just transition to clean energy and community ownership of the infrastructure for energy independence.</li><li>Create innovative solutions that combine solar power + productive appliances for increased income and financial sovereignty.</li><li>Utilize solar power in a way that increases community resilience and helps rural, low-income people to adapt and respond to climate change.</li><li>Implement solar solutions that prioritize women's leadership and agency.</li></ol> With the cost of solar and battery storage decreasing rapidly over the past decade, and with an estimated 600 million people in Africa lacking access to electricity on a continent that is perfect for generating boundless, inexhaustible and nonexcludable energy from the sun—the time is now to ensure equitable access to the clean energy revolution. From my work bringing solar to off-grid, rural communities, I have seen how even small solar solutions can result in exponential ripples of impact for schools, healthcare centers, community centers, traditional savings groups, and their surrounding villages and communities. As Bill McKibben says in his new book, Here Comes the Sun: With solar power, "we have the chance to join in a great global project, providing affordable energy to every human community even as we stave off our greatest threat."
