Commons Stack is raising funds to cover the costs of our research around the Quadratic Accelerator, aka q/acc. We hope this research will be able to support the continued improvement of the q/acc program for use in the Giveth ecosystem (for Gurves) and other Commons focused ecosystems in the future. <h1>What is Commons Stack?</h1> We, Commons Stack, started as a think-tank primarily focused on crypto-economic primitives to underpin a design framework for a Commons, a tokenized community with a mission benefitting a public good. We aspired to scale commons as a way to realign incentives with public goods. To achieve this, we needed to elaborate cultural designs that reinforce commoning principles and create novel tools such as the Augmented Bonding Curve (ABC), Conviction Voting and the Praise reward and reputation system.&nbsp; Our Commons design pattern is a curated library of tools and processes for governance, funding, proposal, analytics and initialization of a Commons. Some have come straight out of our research collaborations -&nbsp;such as the ABC, CV and the Praise reward system - while others were chosen from those available in the web3 tooling marketplace. To&nbsp;really understand what we are trying to build, try out the Commons Simulator: <a href="https://sim.commonsstack.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://sim.commonsstack.org/</a> We see the work of Elinor Ostrom as our North Star and set out to weave her principles of governing commons into the cultural fabric of a Commons. Our Cultural Build defines practices for clear boundaries, conflict resolution, monitoring, participatory decision-making, as well as others.&nbsp; Among our milestones are supporting BlockScience in open-sourcing cadCAD, developing the edutainment program Commons Simulator, launching the Trusted Seed, developing a collaborative economics method, deploying the Token Engineering Commons (TEC) - the first field test for our Commons design patterns, launching the Commons Prize and starting our commons collaboration with Grassroots Economics, the winner of the prize. While we have already had some success, we have only just begun. Our research continues. The lessons learned from a first field test, the Token Engineering Commons (TEC), are being rolled into new deployment protocols and our curated commons library of tools and processes continues to evolve.&nbsp; We did not get this far alone. We have collaborated with BlockScience, Blossom Labs, Metagov, Curve Labs, PrimeDAO, Giveth, 1Hive, Aragon, Token Engineering Academy, Token Engineering Commons, and many others.

Driving rewards to open source dependencies with a market of AIs as the engine and humans as the steering wheel, deep funding requires 3 components: <ul><li>A data layer mapping all contributions to an ecosystem</li><li>An open contest to crowdsource the relative value between contributions</li><li>A jury to express preferences on a randomly selected set of contributions </li></ul> The model(s) best aligning with jury spot checks distribute funds across the dependency graph, thus scaling high quality human judgement <img src="https://giveth.mypinata.cloud/ipfs/QmfMgtuPsdDRUASe8uNDeUn7sFb3W9f21xnQU8Qdf8VC3s"> In most funding rounds, selection procedures require a committee or donors to have an opinion on all eligible projects. In deep funding, the jury votes carefully on a few projects. These selections serve as test data to choose a winning model that decides allocations to all projects, using a data science competition approach (like the ones on Kaggle or Pond) where anyone can submit models giving weights to projects in a round.&nbsp; <h1>Pilot Implementations</h1> Deep Funding kicked off with a <a href="https://huggingface.co/spaces/DeepFunding/PredictiveFundingChallengeforOpenSourceDependencies" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">competition</a> using funding data from 2019-2024 from Open Collective, Gitcoin, Optimism and Octant. Participants needed to build open source AI or metrics based models to predict funding received by projects in these past rounds. The Grant Innovation Lab (GIL) is a collective dedicated to advancing the effectiveness of grant programs, exploring topics such as operations, mechanisms, decentralization, transparency, and impact measurement, amongst others. The GIL team consists of grant managers independent researchers, and evaluation experts with extensive experience running and researching grant programs. Our ultimate goal is to produce as much shared knowledge, and to disseminate it, so that all grant programs can improve. The GIL has produced research such as: <ul><li>State of Web3 Grants Report 2023, </li><li>3 Retroactive Funding Program Case Studies,</li><li>Takeaways from the 2024 Web Grant Summit in Denver,</li><li>Takeaways from the 2024 Grant Operator Workshop in Denver,</li><li>Grant Maturity Index, and</li><li>State of Web3 Grants Report 2024.</li></ul> For 2025, we are mainly prioritizing 2 projects:<ol><li>State of Web3 Grants 2025, which will focus on mapping different mechanisms to desired outcomes to better understand which mechanisms support which results, and</li><li>the Impact Handbook, which will produce a series of comprehensive frameworks for operators to use to support the evaluation of different kinds of grant programs. </li></ol> In addition to our research, the GIL also focuses on shared resources and on community building, which has included events such as: <ul><li>a dinner at DevConnect Istanbul,</li><li>a Web3 Grant Summit in Denver,</li><li>co-hosted the Grant Funding Forum in Brussels,</li><li>host a monthly grant operator call, and </li><li>hosted a 2-day Grant Operator Workshop in Denver in Feb 2025.</li></ul> Our partners and previous funders have included Gitcoin, Octant, Questbook, CharmVerse, DFINITY, ENS Public Goods Grants, Mantle, Rootstock, Manta, the Ethereum Foundation, and Optimism. <h2>Why Public Goods Matter</h2>Public goods are the backbone of society. They’re the things we all benefit from but don’t pay for directly like open-source software, clean rivers, scientific breakthroughs, or community infrastructure. They’re essential, but because they’re free to use, they’re chronically underfunded. Historically, public goods have been supported through taxes, philanthropy, and charitable donations. More recently, grants have helped fill the gap. But those approaches alone aren’t enough to keep pace with the scale of what we need. <h2>Here’s Where Web3 Comes In</h2>Web3 opens the door to something new. Instead of just asking for donations, we can design entire systems that channel value back into the commons—creating incentives, mechanisms, and currencies that make funding public goods a built-in feature of our economies. <h3>Examples of innovations include:</h3><ul><li>Donation matching that amplifies small contributions through collective power</li><li>NFT + DAO models where sales create shared pools for communities to govern</li><li>Yield-based systems that redirect staking rewards or treasury returns to the commons</li><li>Donor rewards that give contributors recognition, perks, or governance rights</li></ul> <h2>Who's in the Cause?</h2>This Cause brings together projects that are running bold experiments, leveraging blockchain tech to making public foods funding so smooth, so efficient and so effective, that the creators can focus on innovating. I’m passionate about how we can actually use this tech to make an impact, because I see major problems in society: Public education is a "public good", but it’s designed to train members of society to be obedient and fall in line. Healthcare is a "public good" in many countries, but it's driven by big pharma and designed to keep people coming back to buy more pills, rather than with their empowerment in mind. If we solve the problem of how to effectively fund public goods, we allow for innovation in these fields, and this allows us to solve massive global problems.
